Understanding Video Compression

Why Videos Take Up So Much Space

A one-minute 4K video at 60fps contains over 3,600 individual frames, each potentially several megabytes in raw form. Even with compression, modern smartphone videos can consume 300-500MB per minute at the highest quality settings. Your phone's storage fills up quickly because we're all recording more video than ever—kids, pets, vacations, concerts, and everyday moments that matter.

How HEVC (H.265) Changes Everything

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, is a modern video codec that achieves the same visual quality as H.264 at roughly half the file size. It does this through better motion prediction, larger coding blocks, and smarter compression algorithms. When you compress an older H.264 video to HEVC, you can often reduce its size by 50-70% with no perceptible quality difference—your eyes literally cannot tell the compressed version from the original.

The Science of "Invisible" Compression

Modern compression exploits how human vision works. We're sensitive to edges and faces but less sensitive to fine texture details and rapid changes in complex areas. Compression algorithms allocate more data to the parts you notice (faces, text, sharp edges) and less to areas where you won't perceive the difference. This is why a well-compressed video can be 70% smaller yet look identical on your phone, TV, or when printed.

Beyond Videos: Photo Storage Tips

While videos are the biggest storage hogs, photos add up too. Here's what typically clutters your library and how to address it:

Screenshots and Screen Recordings

Most people have hundreds of old screenshots—receipts, directions, memes, and things they meant to delete. These accumulate silently and can consume several gigabytes. Our Smart Cleaner tool identifies and groups them for quick review.

Burst Photos

Accidentally triggered burst mode captures 10 photos per second. A single 3-second accidental burst creates 30 nearly-identical photos. Burst Cleaner helps you keep the best shot and delete the rest.

Live Photos

Every Live Photo stores both a still image and a 1.5-second video before and after. This nearly doubles the storage per photo. For photos where the motion adds nothing, converting to still images reclaims significant space.

Duplicates from Apps

WhatsApp, Instagram, and other apps often save copies of photos you share or receive. These duplicates are invisible clutter that our Duplicate Finder surfaces so you can safely remove the extras.
