Not Enough Storage to Update iPhone? Do This First

An iOS update needs working space to download, prepare, and install. The exact requirement varies by update and device, so the safest approach is to create more room than the warning requests rather than chasing an exact number.

Check What Uses the Storage

Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and wait for the category bar and recommendations to load. This tells you whether photos, videos, apps, downloads, messages, or system data are the main pressure.

If Photos is a large category, start with the biggest media instead of deleting apps or personal files at random.

Download HEVCut

Open the App Store, search for HEVCut, choose the listing with the purple icon, and tap Get. Open the app and allow full photo-library access so it can inspect video sizes and group temporary media for review.

Make Space with the Largest Videos

1. Open Videos.
2. Sort by Largest Files.
3. Check the current size and estimated saving.
4. Compress one or two large clips.
5. Compare the results before keeping the smaller copies.

Clear Temporary Photo Clutter

Open Unwanted Photos and review screenshots, screen recordings, and saved images that no longer have a purpose. These are often safer quick wins than deleting memories. Do not bulk-delete receipts, documents, or reference images without checking the selection.

You can also delete old screenshots or clean the camera roll by swiping.

Finish the Cleanup

Let every compression complete and verify the smaller copies. Deleted originals and screenshots may remain in the Photos app’s Recently Deleted album, where they still use storage. Empty it only if you are certain you do not need to recover those files.

Then return to Settings → General → Software Update and try again. Restarting the iPhone can refresh the storage calculation if the available-space number has not updated.

If the update still cannot install, Apple recommends trying the update through a Mac or iTunes on a Windows PC. Back up the iPhone first and follow Apple’s computer-update instructions.
