Videos are re-encoded in HEVC on-device, replacing the originals with the smaller version. iCloud syncs the change automatically.
Common questions.
- How much storage can I actually save?
- Most users save 30-70% of their video storage. Older H.264 clips benefit the most; already-HEVC videos still see 20-30% with tuned settings.
- Will compression affect quality?
- Not visibly. HEVC achieves the same visual quality as H.264 at roughly half the file size. You won't notice a difference watching back.
- Does this save iCloud storage too?
- Yes. Compressed videos sync back to iCloud at the smaller size, reducing your cloud usage on every device. Some users save enough to downgrade their iCloud plan.
- Can I undo a compression?
- Originals go to Photos' Recently Deleted folder for 30 days, which is your safety net. For permanent originals, stash them in the Personal Vault before compressing.
- Does HEVCut work offline?
- Yes. Encoding runs entirely on-device with Apple's hardware HEVC encoder. No uploads, no servers.
