HEVCut vs Slidebox and Swipewipe

Swipe apps turn a cluttered camera roll into a string of small decisions: swipe one way to keep a photo, the other way to delete it. Slidebox (an Apple Editors' Choice, rated 4.8 from about 17,000 ratings) and Swipewipe by MWM (4.7 from about 98,000) are two popular examples. HEVCut has a Swipe mode too, and it doesn't stop at keep or delete.

As listed on the US App Store, checked 19 October 2026. “Not listed” means the source doesn’t mention it, not that the app can’t do it. Sources: Slidebox on the App Store, Swipewipe on the App Store, HEVCut on the App Store.

On free use: HEVCut gives you a limited number of free swipes, and Pro removes the limit. Reviews on Swipewipe's listing mention an 8-hour wait after you finish an album unless you watch an ad. We didn't record Slidebox's free limits.

What HEVCut adds

Swipe the biggest files first

Sort Swipe by Largest Files and the photos and videos taking the most space come up first. Filters narrow the deck to a date range, an album or your personal or shared library, and can hide favorites, Live Photos, slo-mo, spatial videos, GIFs and panoramas.

Keep it, then shrink it

In a swipe app, keeping a photo leaves it at full size. In HEVCut, what you keep can go through compression: HEVC for video, HEIC or AVIF for photos. You compare each result with the original and tap Keep Compressed or Revert. The compressed version keeps the capture date, location, favorite status, albums and filename.

Duplicates and clutter without swiping

Swiping through near-identical shots one by one is slow. HEVCut's Duplicates screen groups them in Exact, Similar, Near and Burst tiers and explains its Keep Best Copy pick. The Clutter screen collects screenshots, screen recordings, blurry photos, QR codes and items saved from messaging and social apps.

A native Mac app

On Mac, HEVCut runs as a native app, and on iPad and Mac you can swipe with the arrow keys.

Swipe through your largest files first, then compress what you keep: HEVCut does both in one app.

Why HEVCut is the better choice

  • Keeping a photo shouldn't mean keeping its full size. A swipe app's best case is that you delete a lot. Most people keep most of their library, so most of the space stays used. HEVCut compresses what you keep, which frees space no amount of swiping can.
  • Your time goes to the files that matter. Sort by Largest Files and the videos eating your storage come up first, instead of hundreds of small photos in date order.
  • Repetitive work is done for you. Swiping through twenty shots of the same sunset is slow. HEVCut groups exact copies, similar shots, near-duplicates and bursts, and suggests which copy to keep with a reason.
  • No waits or ads to keep going. Reviews on Swipewipe's listing mention an 8-hour wait unless you watch an ad. HEVCut shows no ads, and Pro removes the swipe limit entirely.
  • A real Mac app. On Mac, HEVCut is native, and you can swipe with the arrow keys on iPad and Mac.

Switching from a swipe app

Already swiped your library in Slidebox or Swipewipe? Your decisions live in Photos, so nothing is lost. Open HEVCut to compress the photos and videos you kept and to catch the exact copies and bursts swiping missed. Photos keeps deleted items in Recently Deleted for 30 days, so empty it once you're sure.

Frequently asked questions

Do Slidebox or Swipewipe compress photos or videos?

No. Neither listing offers compression, as of 19 October 2026. They help you decide what to delete. HEVCut has a Swipe mode too, and it can also compress what you keep: videos to HEVC, photos to HEIC or AVIF.

Is HEVCut's Swipe free?

You get a limited number of free swipes. Pro removes the limit and includes unlimited compression. HEVCut is free to download; check the App Store for current Pro prices.

Does HEVCut suggest which photos to delete while swiping?

No. Swipe doesn't make recommendations; every keep-or-delete decision is yours. To see the heaviest items first, sort by Largest Files.

Can I undo a swipe in HEVCut?

Yes. There's undo and Start Over, and nothing is deleted until you open the deletion bucket, review it and confirm. Deleted items go to Recently Deleted.

Which of these apps runs on Mac?

Slidebox runs its iPad app on Mac, and Swipewipe's listing covers iPhone and iPad only. HEVCut is a native Mac app, and on iPad and Mac you can swipe with the arrow keys.

Which iOS version do they need?

HEVCut needs iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26. Swipewipe lists iOS 18 or later. We didn't record Slidebox's minimum version, so check its listing.
